Holy Tuesday
Jesus is Anointed with Oil

One night Jesus was eating a meal with friends in the village of Bethany. A women entered with a jar of expensive perfume and she approached Jesus. After pausing she gently and carefully poured it over his head.

Jesus’ followers were angry; they thought it was a waste because the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor.

But Jesus said to his followers “Don’t be angry with this woman. She is doing a good thing. She’s preparing me for my death and my burial. I will not always be with you, but my message and this women’s actions will be remembered and discussed.”

Based on Matthew 26:6-13

Read.

On Holy Tuesday we hear of a woman who sensed something significant was to come in the next few days, unlike the others around her – including Jesus’ followers.  She may not have been fully aware, but was moved to act by anointing Jesus with perfume, a symbolic and respectful act.

In this moment, the one who sees the most clearly is a person who exists on the edges. Sometimes it is those we don’t expect who can offer important insight into our lives, our communities and our churches.

Think About.

Consider how you might intentionally find spaces to hear the voices of people on the edges: marginalised people and communities, under represented groups, or people with different life experiences.

Think about what assumptions you may need to break down about these people, before being able to hear them.

Prayer.

God, we ask you to help us open our ears and hearts to hear from those often overlooked. We pray we will hear your voice and direction through them. Amen.
