Holy Wednesday
Jesus is Betrayed

One of Jesus’ followers, Judas Iscariot sought out the chief priests. They paid him thirty pieces of silver for information on Jesus’ whereabouts. From that moment Judas looked for an opportunity to betray Jesus.

Based on Matthew 26:14-16

Read.

On Holy Wednesday we find ourselves shocked to hear of Jesus being betrayed. While there are several different thoughts on why Judas made this decision, the reasons don’t change our reaction to it. Our shock is still real. We might wonder why anyone would want to hurt Jesus?

Jesus was a challenge to people in power in his time. His ministry and his words of love, compassion and acceptance of people on the edges disrupted the current society, religious and political rules. As more people listened and followed Jesus, his presence was more and more dangerous to those in power.

Think About.

Following Jesus often requires us to sit outside the ‘rules’ and expectations of the world around us.

What are some ways of following Jesus that might shock the people around us?

Prayer.

God, we thank you for Jesus’ example of how to live in the world. We pray for the courage to live outside the ‘rules’ and to live with love, compassion and acceptance. Amen.
